February 2nd of this year was the 350th anniversary of the first crush of grapes in South Africa. Thus we thought it fitting to feature one of South Africa's best wineries this month, Mulderbosch Vineyards. They are renowned for their whites, but we think their Bordeaux-style Faithful Hound is pretty fabulous as well. Mike Dobrovic, co-owner of the estate is considered one of the best winemakers in the country.
Mulderbosch was founded in 1989, when physician Larry Jacobs purchased a dilapidated fruit farm in Stellenbosch and convinced up-and-coming winemaker Mike Dobrovic to join him in developing the vineyards and the cellar from the ground up. From the first vintage, the fledgling winery captured the attention and respect of the wine world, helping to create a reputation for South Africa as a source of world-class wines.
In addition to the racy, standard-bearing Sauvignon Blanc (which helped propel the farm to its current near-cult status), Mulderbosch also crafts an extensive range of award-winning wines from Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
Harmony is central to the Mulderbosch philosophy, and the farm has been developed with strict attention to the environment. 25% of the property has been dedicated to a conservancy, ensuring the preservation of indigenous vegetation and wildlife.
We currently have in stock:
Mulderbosch Sauvignon Blanc 2007 - $21
Mulderbosch Chenin Blanc 2008 - $15
Mulderbosch Chardonnay 2004 - $24
Mulderbosch Rosé of Cabernet 2008 - $13
Mulderbosch Faithful Hound 2005 - $24
We will be featuring these wines at a tasting with Jen Minke from The Country Vintner
Wednesday, February 25th from 6-8 pm.
